Full overview of O level social studies tuition Singapore

10/18/2019

2017 was the first year in which O-Level social studies tuition Singapore students sat on the newly revised Social Studies (SS) syllabus for their examination paper. While the students of Humanities Hub performed well, with more than 63 percent winning distinctions, most Sec 3 and 4 students continued to struggle with the more nuanced material and a new set of critical thinking skills that led them to poorly scoring in school tests and exams.

Mistake 1:

Not addressing the requirements in the questions.

In questions like, for example, "How far do these sources agree on ...?" Candidates will know that their desired ability is "comparison," and if they begin to write that "the sources are different because ..." they will not meet the criteria in the query. Students must begin their responses in the GCE ' O ' level exams using the keywords in the query, "Source A agrees with Source B ....."

Mistake 2:

Applying a formulaic approach in the answering of SBCS and SRQ.

Schools contribute greatly to this failure. Most students were drilled to memorize a certain equation in tests and this has caused students to waste a lot of time worrying about how to answer questions using the formula. Only if the type of sources stays the same and does not differ will a method work, which is definitely not the case in examinations. Similarly, "PEEL" (Point, Elaboration, Example, Link) has been used frequently in the SRQ portion and some have even used it to refer to SBCS questions improperly!

Mistake 3:

Heavy regurgitation of content.

2018 is the second year of the updated syllabus of social studies, taking 50% new skills with it. Nevertheless, most teachers tend to use methods that operated in the old syllabus which ended in 2017 (for Sec 5 students), requiring a lot of material to be memorized by students. As a result, most students were compensated by the new 457-page coursebook! It is not surprising that they hate the topic! It's not the amount of content that you regurgitate, but the choice of content that gets the highest number of marks to support your argument.

Mistake 4:

Failure to plan an outline for both sections of the paper.

If you don't prepare, you're going to fail. It's easy to understand why you need to plan your response before you write down your answers. But how many students fail or neglect to perform this simple task that will save them so much pain on the street, you'll be shocked. Just ask how many students, if they could finish the paper, did not plan their answers!

Mistake 5:

Not being realistic and acclimatised to examination conditions.

The Social Studies paper lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes. Candidates must demonstrate their training in the updated syllabus by deliberately and strategically choosing material to reach the highest level of marks within time constraints. If time wasn't a concern, one's answer will be different. The syllabus is for the ages of 16 to 17 and the responses should be judged on the basis of this. Therefore, following responses written by adults, teaching in the classroom has often been unrealistic expectations for students to role model.

Social Studies Is An Essential L1R5 Subject That Determines Whether Your Child Can Enter JC

comes to ' O ' level and preparation for exams. Nevertheless, for most students, social studies is an important subject in their L1R5, particularly when it is the only subject of humanities they are taking at ' O ' levels. Which means that if ignored, a bad ' O ' level for social studies tuition Singapore can easily pull down the score of your child and jeopardize the application of JC!

Setting a study plan: Students may study hard (often equated with hours), but if they do not set a learning plan, it is not successful. A training plan is to prioritize subjects/topics, set learning goals, assign time and define resources. Students often avoid subjects in which they are low, but they will benefit from the constant practice of answering questions from exam papers from different schools or past O-Level exams. Through practice, the student becomes more able to interpret what is needed in the question, organize their processes of thinking and clearly structure their response even under stressful conditions of evaluation. This is a common reason why students find it difficult to answer source-based questions.

Mindmapping: In order to do well, a student needs not only a strong argument but also clear evidence to support it. Mindmaps are useful to break down huge chunks of information and highlight relevant facts so students can use valid examples to validate their answers. Mindmapping and taking notes enhance the mind of one. While mastering is a difficult skill, experienced teachers can do it with practice and guidance.

Answering the question: It sounds simple, yet so many students do not understand the criteria of the question and are therefore unable to answer high marks. Examiners typically don't write ambiguous questions purposefully, but they can adjust the direction or context of how they answer a question. Students memorizing "pattern essays" will be tripped and students who understand the question clearly will be able to provide good answers and earn high marks. Concise answers that will score the answer to the question. A longer answer that doesn't only waste time on ranking parameters, but also doesn't get high marks.

Reading widely: when it comes to improving language skills and general knowledge, nothing beats reading. It is also critical for subjects such as social studies that students understand material sources, what happened in other countries, and apply it to the context of Singapore. For A-Level General Paper, a strong understanding of general knowledge will also be useful.
